ANOTHER WORLD STOOD HERE (2017) for flute ensemble (piccolo, five C, alto, bass and optional contrabass) by Howard
J. Buss was composed after an ancient oak tree was removed from his neighbor’s yard. Buss states, “The crew worked for several days to dismantle and haul away the enormous tree. I had lived next to it for a quarter of a century. The morning after they finished the job I visited the site were the mighty tree once stood and felt a deep sense of loss. It had become part of my life, and I reflected on how it served as home for countless birds and other animals, how it survived numerous hurricanes and lightning storms, and remembered the precious shade it provided during the long Florida summers. This work is dedicated to the memory of this ancient friend.” This work is appropriate for both intermediate-level and advanced flute choirs. (6’10") Grade IV. Score Sample.pdf - Video on YouYube

DRY BONES, the well-known African American spiritual (the foot bone's connected to the leg bone, the leg bone's connected to the...), arranged by Howard Buss. Multiple players may be used on each part to expand
the ensemble.
The introduction begins hymn-like, then breaks out in a jubilant jazzy section. This is followed by a more traditional rendering of the spiritual; As the music reaches its climax the jazz "licks" from the introduction are brought back as counterpoint against the main melody of the spiritual. For a bit of humor, as the work ends, there is a "tongue-in-cheek" plagal cadence. (230) Grade IV.

LEVI'S DREAM for flute quartet or ensemble by Howard J. Buss can be performed as a quartet with three C flutes and a bass flute; or with two C flutes, alto flute, and bass flute. (An alto flute in G is provided as and alternative to flute 3.) Multiple players may be used on the parts to expand the ensemble. The title refers to an imagined dream of Levi, the namesake of the Israelite Tribe. The Levites were known for their involvement in priestly duties and music. The music has a distinctly Middle-eastern quality. The soulful nature of the slower sections is enhanced by the expressive, luscious ambience of the flutes. Featured are 2 sections with original tunes in the style of Jewish folk songs. One is slow and contemplative, the other, jubilant. This is an audience-friendly work appropriate for the concert hall or a house of worship. (7’40”) Grade IV.

ZEPHYRS OF THE DAWN for flute choir by Howard
J. Buss. The character of the music is meditative and at times conveys a hint of portent, as if to suggest that these gentle, yet persistent early morning breezes contain within them hints of the events of the coming day. The musical scoring does not require the performers to venture into extreme registers or use extended techniques. It is scored for piccolo, five C flutes, alto flute, bass flute, and optional contrabass flute. Because of its modest technical demands it is appropriate for both intermediate-level and advanced flute choirs. (5’) Grade IV. Score Sample.pdf - Video on YouYube
